And then there was speed..

Four years ago when our team assisted in rolling out the Next Generation Network, we took the opportunity to pick a spot in our district to build a new datacenter and centralize and house our critical system services. It’s hard to believe that it’s been a solid four years, but what was once new is starting to show its age.

Over the last 8 months or so our team has been working collaboratively with our neighboring districts (Campbell River, Cowichan & Campbell River). The tech leaders in each district have been gratefully offering knowledge sharing, one on ones, video conferencing & meetings to go over our vision for the future. Ultimately, together we are stronger.

Fast forward to 2019 & the new NGN 2.0 is upon us.. or as it’s referred to internally as ECS. This will deliver new firewalls and architecture to each of our schools to optimize traffic, speed & security. In planning for that, our team has been putting together some plans to assist in the growth of our datacenter to support continual growth of our network.

Did you know..
-Our team assists in ensuring our network backbones are kept fast, secure & reliable by continual monitoring and real time alerts?
-Our FileMaker Server has seen exponential growth in the last two years, reaching new bandwidth capacity?
-Our in house SD64 Cloud sharing file server houses nearly 13TB of storage?
-Our entire district data is backed up each and every night to ensure redundancy and protection of our resources?

All this growth can mean one thing… proper management of all that data. Much like a highway, infrastructure limits how many vehicles you can put on a road. Our datacenter has been peaking near 80% capacity for the last year, so we’re starting to see the ceiling.

We’re thrilled to announce today our team introduced a new appliance to our datacenter which will carve a new beginning for speed & reliability. In tech terminology, we refer to this as 10G technology (it’s kind of what LTE cell networks were to 3G). The bandwidth and capacity of this new backbone is exponential – while there’s lots of new learning and fine tuning to come – we’re thrilled to be pushing forward and committing to our in-house developed tools that make our Educators lives easier.

Starting today, you’ll be able to enjoy the benefits of 10G backbone speed when using:

-Filemaker Pro
-SD64 Cloud hosting data
-SD64 Helpdesk
-iPad Self Serve Store

There’s more to come this spring & summer, so we’ll keep you posted as we go.

Thanks for being part of the journey.
